A first release or performance can bring a P-pop group to listeners long before its formal debut.
On September 25, Davao girl group DAELUX released “Like That,” its first song under Sony Music Philippines. There is a recording to play, a group to discover and a sound to react to. Yet the release is described as pre-debut.
If “debut” simply meant a group’s first public song, that description would make little sense. Groups often use the word for a formal launch they have chosen to mark separately. For these pre-debut P-pop groups, the public story has already begun. Fans can hear their music, watch them perform and learn who the members are.
The First Release Is Already Part of the Story
DAELUX is one of three Davao acts introduced with pre-debut songs under Sony Music Philippines. HARA released “My Love” in February, leading with a message of self-worth. AYO followed in April with “I’m Him,” a hip-hop-leaning declaration of confidence. DAELUX’s “Like That” takes a lighter route through the uncertainty of liking someone and waiting to see if the feeling is returned.
Those differences matter more than the shared label or hometown. A song gives each act an identity listeners can hear for themselves. It also gives the group a starting point that the next release may develop or challenge. Calling these tracks pre-debut does not make them disposable rehearsals. They are the first music by which many people will know HARA, AYO and DAELUX.
Project WAN offers another route into that stage. Eight performers from Be the NEXT: 9 Dreamers came together under a new name and released “UY!” as a pre-debut single in March. Their independent, self-produced approach gives listeners a chance to hear this lineup together outside the show that brought its members to public attention. Billboard Philippines later included “UY!” among its most-voted releases of the first half of the year. The song has a life beyond its initial announcement, even while Project WAN calls this its pre-debut period.
Some Groups Meet Their Audience on Stage
DAY ONE has been taking its introduction from mall to mall. Its Find Their Stories pre-debut busking series began in August and continued through September. Five of DAY ONE’s members previously belonged to the debuted P-pop group NEW:ID. They now perform with a sixth member, Nyle, under the name DAY ONE. At a busking stop, people encounter this lineup through a live set and the members’ interaction with an audience, before DAY ONE’s own formal launch.
That distinction matters for a reconfigured group. Familiar performers do not automatically bring an audience’s understanding of who they are now. DAY ONE is giving people repeated chances to see its current lineup together before attaching an official debut date to this chapter.
The Names and Lineups Are Still Taking Shape
Other early releases carry the task of introducing a new name. EverChild, formerly Rajah, has shared “Walang Maiiwan” as a pre-debut track. For a listener who knew Rajah, the song is an entry point to EverChild as it exists now. YSLA released “No Label” in August while still describing its journey as pre-debut. Their music and current identities are already in public view.
